G8: Major Economic Indicators

The G8 is an assembly created in France in 1975. Originally its was just the G6 with France, Germany, Italy, Japan, United Kingdom and the United Sates as members. However Canada joined in 1976 and Russia in 1997 to create the G8. The European Union is represented but doesn't have a chair. The G8 leaders meet annually at a summit which is hosted by each of the member countries in turn. However the ministers of the G8 countries may meet several times during the year. The G8's leaders announced that the G8 would be replaced by the G20 as the main economic council for wealthy nations.
