Executive summary

Hungary’s travel and tourism sector generated 3.8% of the national GDP and created 372,800 jobs, representing 10% of the country’s total employment levels in 2011. Of the total jobs created through the travel and tourism sector, 212,500 jobs were direct industry jobs, while 160,300 jobs were created through the travel and tourism supply chain. The total number of domestic and outbound trips undertaken by Hungarian residents decreased mainly due to the global economic crisis, which caused job losses and reduced levels of consumer confidence. Despite this, the volume of Hungarian tourists increased at a slow pace in 2011, due to the country’s improved economic environment, rising employment levels and provision of low-priced travel services.
