Executive summary

Polish companies are allowed to conduct reinsurance business activities in the country as either just reinsurance companies or as both insurance and reinsurance companies. Poland contains a small domestic reinsurance market. However, the rapid development of infrastructure in the region and the multinational nature of business units in the country offer opportunities for the Polish reinsurance segment to expand over the forecast period. The Central European flooding in 2010 has also encouraged several insurance companies, especially non-life insurers, to seek reinsurance services to mitigate their risks from future natural disasters.

• The presence of large multinational reinsurers in Poland, such as Swiss Re, Munich Re and Allianz, make the Poland reinsurance segment highly competitive.
• The implementation of Solvency II norms based on economic risk analysis is expected to improve the competitiveness of the insurance industry, which will have a direct impact on the reinsurance segment and generate more demand for reinsurance protection over the forecast period.
• The unfavorable weather conditions in 2010 also encouraged more insurance premium to be ceded to reinsurers.
