Executive summary

Growth in the Australian non-life insurance segment during the review period (2007–2011) was driven by an increase in GDP, a rise in the level of disposable incomes and the occurrence of natural disasters in 2010–2011, which has increased premium costs. The occurrence of natural disasters has increased the level of risk awareness and driven consumer preparation for risk avoidance. These factors along with growth in the property and automobile markets are expected to drive the growth of the non-life insurance segment in Australia.

Key highlights

• A rise in the number of natural disasters such as floods, cyclones, storms and bushfires impacted the Australian non-life insurance segment both positively and negatively. Cyclones and floods in Queensland, storms in Victoria and bushfires in Western Australia during 2010–2011 heightened consumer awareness regarding the benefits of obtaining protection. This rising levels of consumer awareness regarding the benefits of non-life insurance cover due to the effects of 2010–2011 floods, is expected to drive growth over the forecast period.
• Australia was affected by eight natural disasters in 2010. Again in February 2011, Northern Queensland was affected by Cyclone Yasi. Floods returned to the states of Queensland and New South Wales in January and February 2012.
• Due to the adverse affects of the global financial crisis and natural disasters, profit margins were affected. Consequently, some general insurance companies ceased their business operations and the number of companies declined from 136 in 2009 to 132 licensed insurers in 2011.
• The Australian non-life insurance business generated lower premium incomes than the Australian life insurance business during the review period. The Australian non-life insurance business is fragmented. QBE Australia was the largest non-life insurance company in the segment, followed by Insurance Australia Limited, Allianz Australia Insurance, Insurance Manufacturers of Australia, Australian Associated Motor Insurers, CGU Insurance, GIO General, Vero Insurance, Suncorp Metway Insurance and Wesfarmers General Insurance Limited.
