Executive summary

The life insurance segment in Indonesia accounted for the largest share of total written premiums in 2011. The growth was mainly generated from the strong performance of individual life insurance products such unit-linked and term life products. It was further encouraged by robust economic development and improved stock market performance following a decline in 2009 due to the global financial crisis. The Indonesian life insurance segment has gradually evolved from only offering risk-protection products to also offering investment-related products. Over the forecast period, increasing awareness of the need for insurance products and continuing improvements in distribution are expected to reduce a cultural bias against insurance and increase sales.

• The Indonesian life insurance segment recorded impressive growth at a CAGR of 19.5% during the review period in terms of gross written premium value.
• The growth was mainly generated from the strong performance of individual life insurance products such unit-linked and term life.
• Growing consumer awareness enabled the Indonesian life insurance segment to register high growth during the review period. Over this time, preference for life insurance products as a long-term security measure increased.
• Increased life expectancy among the Indonesian population was another key growth driver for the Indonesian life insurance segment during the review period.
• In 2011, agencies generated almost half of the total new business written premiums in the life insurance segment. The primary reason for this strong preference was that Indonesia is made up of a large group of islands, making a broad network of agents the most efficient way to sell, promote and manage insurance products across the entire population.
