Executive summary

Oman’s construction industry is anticipated to benefit from the country’s 2011 Budget and Eighth Five-Year Plan 2011 to 2015. The Omani government is focused on the improvement of the country’s existing infrastructure to meet the needs of Oman’s increasing population. Oman’s Vision 2020 identified industry and tourism as two areas of economic diversification and sustainable development. As a result, the Omani government is focused on aiding growth in these sectors through incentives and opportunities for foreign businesses. The Public Establishment for Industrial Estates (PEIE) is the Omani government agency which manages industrial estates in the country and has invested a significant amount of money into the growth of industrial construction in Oman.

During the forecast period, growth in the Omani construction industry will attract FDI into the country, strengthen the economy and expand revenue sources. During the review period, many international contractors collaborated with Omani constructions firms to become part of the Omani construction industry. Moreover, as the development of infrastructure and a good quality transport network are key to attracting foreign investment into Oman, the Omani government has focused on the improvement of the transport sector in the Eighth Five-Year Plan 2011 to 2015. With various infrastructure projects due to commence in 2011, and the country’s first railway infrastructure project due to start in 2012, the Omani construction industry is expected to continue to demonstrate growth during the forecast period.

Key highlights

• The commercial construction market in Oman demonstrated strong growth during the review period. Growth in the commercial construction market was also driven by growth in the retail building and leisure and hospitality building categories.
• The infrastructure market demonstrated the second-fastest growth within the Omani construction industry during the review period. This was as a result of the government’s initiative to improve infrastructure, such as the road network.
• During the review period, the industrial construction market in Oman demonstrated growth, as a result of government’s aim to decrease the country’s dependence on the oil industry.
• During the review period, the residential construction market demonstrated significant growth which reflected the increase in demand for housing in the country. The increased levels of disposable income and immigration also contributed to the significant increase in demand for housing.
